Cross Country

The varsity ran Saturday, Sept. 15, at the 38th annual Woodbridge Invitation held on a flat 3-mile course out in Norco in Riverside County. The boys finished 10th and tops among their school size. D1 #1 Great Oak won the event, followed by 2 – Newbury Pak, 3 – Thousand Oaks, 4 – West Ranch, 5 – Eastwood (TX), 6 – Long Beach Poly, 7 – Southlake Carroll (TX), 8 – Riverton (UT), 9 – Granada (Livermore).

Scoring for the Breakers were Sebastian Fisher (14:38.8 – new school 3-mile record), Ryan Smithers, Zach Falkowski, Mateo Bianchi and Cal Nielson.

On the girls side, Laguna finished 21st out of 23 teams with Hannah Konkel setting a new school 3-mile record with a 17:31.9, breaking the record held by Lindsey Bulwalda (1996) and Natasha Strickland (2011). Also scoring for the girls were Jessie Rose, Morgan Falkowski, Sierra Read and Kaitlin Ryan.

Girls Tennis (0-3)

The squad competed in the Beckman tournament on Sept. 13-14, defeating Irvine and Mater Dei.

No other results were provided. On Monday, Sept. 17, they lost to Beckman 14-4.  Sarah MacCallum won her three matches in singles for three of Laguna’s four points.

 

Boys Sand Volleyball

Season opened on Tuesday, Sept. 18, with Saddleback Valley Christian – results next week.

 

Girls Volleyball (4-7)

Breakers played great last week with a five-game win at Corona del Mar (17-11) on Sept. 12 as they took down the Sea Queens for the second year in a row 25-22, 21-25, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12.  The lower levels also won at CdM, giving Laguna the sweep of the day for the first time since the series renewed in 1999.

Cambria Hall led the squad with 16 kills, Piper Naess added 12 and Ella Tyus 9. Soren Patchell recorded five services aces and Jackie Strawn had four. On digs, Halle Carballo recorded 20, Naess 17, and Hall 16. Match point was secured on a block of CdM’s all-county performer Kendall Kipp by Piper Naess and Jackie Strawn.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Breakers swept Los Alamitos (12-8) 25-23, 26-24, 25-22 at Dugger Gym. Ella Tyus led the way with 12 kills while Piper Naess added 12 digs and Halle Carballo 16 digs. Soren Patchell scored four aces, and tough blocking by Luisa LoFranco contributed to the win

This past Tuesday, the Breakers got off to a hot start on Huntington Beach (8-4) as Cambria Hall picked up six service aces early in the first set on the way to an easy 25-18 win, but after squeaking out a 25-23 victory in set two, the Oilers caught fire to win the nest three 25-12, 25-16, 15-9 for the match victory. Overall, Piper Naess had 17 kills and Ella Tyus 12. Breakers recorded 14 aces.

On Friday, Sept. 21, Laguna will host D3 #1 Village Christian (16-7) at 5:45 p.m. in Dugger Gym. The Crusaders have played a tough schedule and will be a challenge for the Breakers. The schools last met in the D3 CIF semifinals back in 2015 when the Crusaders upset the Breakers in a five-set match at their Sun Valley campus.

Boys Water Polo (4-5)

Laguna started last week losing to unranked Damien 9-8 at home on Sept. 11, but the squad bounced back to take #15 Orange Lutheran 12-10 on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Laguna pool.

The contest with the Lancers was tied seven times with O Lu dominating the second period. Breakers battled back in the final minute before intermission on a goal by Keller Kramer and Marshall Eichenauer to pull within one score. The game was very tight after that, with Laguna pulling away in the final period with a score by Logan McCarroll at the 4:22 mark and by William Kelly at 2:11 to seal the victory.

On Monday at Newport, Laguna lost their Surf League opening league match 10-7, snapping the team’s 57 league match win streak dating back to 2006. The Sailors are currently ranked #2 in CIF.

This weekend, the Breakers are in the 32-team South Coast Tournament and are seeded 7th.
