Laguna’s Development Chief, Zoning Administrator to Retire

Laguna Beach’s longtime Community Development Director John Montgomery will retire at the end of June and zoning administrator Liane Schuller will retire in March, the city manager announced Monday, Jan. 6.

Jted to community development director of in 2003. He held planning positions in Montana and Colorado and worked as a principal planner for San Bernardino, a city of 60 square miles and 185,000 people before taking a position in Laguna Beach, a city of less than 10 square miles and 24,000 people.

served as zoning administrator since 2004. She previously held positions in the cities of Newport Beach and Santa Ana.

“The city will truly miss the leadership John and Liane have provided to guide a very technical and complex department,” said City Manager John Pietig, who has started a selection process to find replacements for the two employees he called “consummate professionals who have worked hard to serve the community through a changing development process over the last two decades.”

“Liane and I have great respect for all who serve the city, the great work that everyone does, and the differences we have made for the community,” said Montgomery, adding “We will miss our ‘work family’ but know that lasting friendships will be a future part of our lives.”
