New Music Series Starts in the New Year

Laguna Beach Live is offering a discounted season subscription to its Jazz Wednesdays Winter Series for those who buy online.

 

The concerts begin Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. and features an array of jazz artists in a cabaret style club at the Laguna Room of Hotel Laguna. Leading off the series is Latin Jazz Syndicate with trumpeter Bijon Watson. Other artists in the lineup are Bill Cunliffe, Carol Welsman, Dan Reckard, Josh Nelson, Joshua White and Jeff Hamilton.

 

Cover charge is $12 online and season subscription is discounted for early bird buyers.  On Saturday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m., Nashville Backstage will feature father/daughter songwriting duo Randy and Maria Sharp at the Artists Theater. A Sound That Resonates for the 99 Percent

Laguna Playhouse hosts the premiere of Rubicon Theatre’s “Lonesome Traveler,” a concert that journeys on the rivers of American folk music from the hills of Appalachia to the nightclubs of San Francisco and New York.

Written and directed by Rubicon’s artistic director, James O’Neil, with musical direction and arrangements by Dan Wheetman, “Lonesome Traveler begins Jan. 10 and continues through Feb. 5 at The Laguna Playhouse.  Presented in the style of a concert with a story line, “Lonesome Traveler is performed by nine artists who create musical portraits inspired by folk musicians such as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Lead Belly, The Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary and others.

A few of the well-known titles include “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “This Land is Your Land,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Goodnight Irene,” “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “We Shall Overcome,” and “Maggie’s Farm.”

 

Ticket prices range from $30 to $65 for performances Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m., Thursday matinees on Jan. 12 and 26 at 2 p.m. and Sunday evening shows at 7 p.m. For information and to purchase tickets, call 949-497-2787 or visit www.lagunaplayhouse.com.
