Laguna resident Bob Borthwick, a principal of Borthwick Guy Bettenhausen landscape architects of Irvine, recently received the award of merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects for the San Clemente Beach Trail.

Three other Laguna Beach residents added their expertise to the project, including landscape architect Ann Christoph, who assisted with planting design, and artists Marlo Bartels, who created custom tile work for the project, and photographer Tom Lamb, who provided photo documentation for the award.

A $15 million project, the 2.6 mile trail is situated at the base of the beach bluffs near the railroad tracks and extends the entire length of the city, incorporating railroad undercrossings, pedestrian bridges, public art, and native landscaping.

Dog-walkers and visitors enjoy an award-winning beach trail devised by local Bob Borthwick.
