Save the Date: Protest Nuclear Fuel Storage at San O

Editor,

Only Pope Francis seems to be speaking out against the deadly dangers of nuclear energy and the nuclear industry.

The tower of Babel is a powerful image of human self-destruction under the desire for power. The public must show up and demand that the Department of Energy (DOE) come to San Onofre to remove the spent nuclear fuel as it promised.

SCE has not altered its decommissioning plan other than to fast-track taking down all the buildings. The NRC has given SCE permission to bury the deadly nuclear fuel and leave it for 60 to 160 years 200 feet from the Pacific ocean in experimental canisters. The DOE could move it in five years to an interim location in New Mexico without going through the costly dry storage and tearing up Camp Pendleton to bury it on the bluff.

Show up on July 23 in Oceanside for the next community engagement panel meeting and make them protect us!  The meeting will be at 6 p.m., The Quantum Learning Network Conference Center, 1938 Avenida del Oro, Oceanside, 92056.

  1. Marni, the fuel will NOT be buried on the bluff, no time period for its storage has been given because nobody knows when the government will either take possession themselves or allow control by a private contractor, like one in the state of Texas has offered to do (not specifically San Onofre fuel), the canisters are NOT experimental, SCE has not “fast tracked” the taking down of the buildings (unless you simply mean SCE will not safe store, but that has been their plan and stated goal all along) AND, you are not seriously suggesting they take it to WIPP are you? You know, the site your group of fanatics has complained so much about.

Have you told your readers that the canisters the anti-nuke zealots insist SCE use have been totally rejected by the ENTIRE US nuclear industry? Only a handful of canisters are in storage here, and on a single site done as a trial run/experiment. Following this, the license to store in these canisters lapsed (except for this site alone) and therefore, these ductile cast iron casks are NOT licensed here in America like the casks SCE will use. Do they know these casks were NEVER given a license to ship in America by the NRC because the NRC feared they might shatter if dropped? Do Laguna Beach residents know that these casks are too heavy for the crane equipment at SONGs and that all the wishing in the world won’t make them any lighter?
Marni, be careful of who you listen to and deem credible because you have been sold a bill of goods.
