Laguna Beach’s Blue Lagunas girls under 11 team, which won an AYSO Extra championship in fall and finished first in a spring club circuit, won

Irvine’s Joy Fawcett Classic tournament last weekend.

The team was moved to the top flight just a week before the tournament, which meant that the Blue Lagunas faced teams playing two skill divisions higher than their own.

The girls relied on their speed and athleticism to counter the technical skills and passing game of their well coached opponents.

“This tournament win is a real Cinderella story. Just when I think I could not possibly be any prouder of these girls, they blow me away with a win like this one,” said Coach Ole Nielsen.

The team now sets its sights on playing GU12 Club soccer in the fall.
