Boys Basketball (7-5)
Breakers went 2-3 in the very tough Irvine News Tournament last week, preparation for league and Laguna’s CIF division placement.
The tournament opened on Dec. 11 with a 52-42 loss to Woodbridge followed by a similarly close 60-52 setback to Tesoro.
Laguna hit the victory column with a 70-58 defeat of Esperanza on Dec. 13 at Woodbridge, pulling away with a 21-9 fourth quarter run with a balanced scoring attack. On Friday, Breakers defeated Edison 60-54 as Cole Kesler scored 17 with Alec Wulff adding 14. In the final contest, Northwood defeated Laguna 54-45. Mission Viejo won the event.
Breakers will be in the Estancia tournament after Christmas.
Girls Basketball (7-1)
Laguna continued to gain confidence after last season’s 0-18 run with a 43-29 win over Capo Valley Christian last Saturday, Dec. 15. Jackie Cenan and Jane Wallen led the team with 12 points each.
Boys Soccer (3-0-1)
Laguna crushed Saddleback Valley Christian 6-0 in a match played on Friday, Dec. 14 at Guyer Field. Two goals each were scored by Hunter Ashworth and Reece Barton, while Gregory Harrison and Chris Tellez each scored one. Breakers defeated Trabuco Hills 5-0 on Monday, Dec. 17 at Guyer. The league race will be challenging this season with Godinez ranked in the county top 10 and the remaining league members all of similar talent. Playoff spots are wide open.
Girls Water Polo (3-1)
Laguna edge Mater Dei 9-8 on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Monarch’s pool. Mackenzie Baldridge scored four goals and Jenna Knott had another good outing as keeper. Makenzie Fischer returned to the line up with a pair of goals.
