Boys Basketball (5-0)

Breakers broke an 11-year in-season tournament title drought in defeating Aliso Niguel 59-55 last Saturday, Dec. 2, night to capture the Grizzly Tournament title at Godinez. The Breakers all-time leading scorer, Blake Burzell was named the MVP while Charlie Rounaghi and Owen McMurray made the all-tournament team. Newport Harbor defeated San Clemente for third place.

Breakers traditionally play in three in-season tournaments each year and had not won a title since defeating Torrance 68-61 on Dec. 12, 2006, in the finals of the Orange Coast Optimist Classic at Garden Grove High School.

To get to the finals was no easy task. Laguna opened play with a 73-49 win over El Dorado on Nov. 29 and came back on Nov. 30 to edge El Toro 55-54.

On Friday, Dec. 1, the Breakers defeated Newport Harbor 64-52 in the semifinals with Burzell scoring 30 and McMurray hitting five three-point shots. It was only the Breakers eighth win ever over Newport in 43 tries stretching back 83 seasons

The first home game is Friday, Dec. 22, when Laguna hosts Upland at 7 p.m. in Dugger Gym.

Girls Basketball (0-6)

Breakers lost all four games at the Fullerton tournament last week, losing 62-3 to La Serna on Nov. 28, 60-5 to Trabuco Hills on Nov. 30, 35-10 to Los Amigos on Dec. 1 and 44-18 to host Fullerton on Dec. 2. This past Monday, Dec. 4, Laguna was in another tournament and lost to Artesia 50-14.
