Zak Kovacic, a Thurston eighth-grader traveled to Omaha, Neb., June 22-26 with a group of baseball players to compete in the Slump Buster Fest 2011 baseball tournament. The Pride Baseball Club of Rancho Santa Margarita invited 10 kids to make this trip and compete for top honors.

This is one of the largest youth baseball tournaments, involving 400 teams from 40 states, which runs in conjunction with the College World Series. The first two days of the tournament consisted of three games of pool play to establish seeding for the single elimination brackets.

Pride BBC stomped the competition by scoring 33 runs and top seed in the tournament. The next two days consisted of single elimination games. Pride BBC continued the winning streak for games four, five, and six, putting them into the semi finals against the Alabama Storm where they ultimately lost.

Pride BBC finished in third place and earned a bronze medal. In addition the kids were able to attend CWS games at the Ameritrade Park for its inaugural season.
