Current City Council member Kelly Boyd will serve as the grand marshall of the 2016 Patriot’s Day Parade on March 5. The honored patriot this year will be retired Marine Lieutenant Carlos McAfee, parade organizers announced.

Organizers rely solely on program advertisers and donations to put on the event and the Jan. 11 deadline is fast approaching, says organizer Sandi Werthe. The entry deadline is Jan. 15.

Others in the lineup include Elle Mahdavi and Alexander Rounaghi from the Laguna Beach High School class of 2016, selected as junior citizens on the basis of their academic achievements and service to our community. Athletes of the year are champion skim boarders Nick Hernandez Jr. and Sam Stinnett.

Longtime Sawdust Festival member Dion Wright has been chosen as artist of the year and longtime resident and editor of StuNewsLaguna, Stu Saffer, is the citizen of the year.

The winner of the parade essay contest is Thurston Middle School eighth grader Nicole Motherway and the winner of the parade program cover art contest is Garry Ledesma, a LBHS senior. Each will receive a $100 award sponsored by Union Bank and the Parade Association.
