Jodie Gates, a former Joffrey ballerina during a 2005 rehearsal, teaches a class this weekend in Laguna Beach.

Laguna Dance Festival will offer a master dance class for intermediate and advanced dancers taught by its founder, Jodie Gates, Saturday, Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Laguna Beach High School Dance Studio, 625 Park Ave.

Gates, who has taught for more than 25 years, is vice dean and director of USC’s dance school. She will lead a ballet technique class followed by repertory and a question and answer session.

“Our aim at the university is to lay the groundwork for the next generation of dance artists who will make Southern California the new mecca for successful dancers, choreographers for stage and film, and entrepreneurs who will create leadership roles in the field.” Under Gates’s direction, the school has developed a new program, “The New Movement,” pioneering conservatory training within a private university.

The cost is $25 per dancer and $15 for observers. Space is limited. Register is required at www.lagunadancefestival.org.
