Letter: City Should Consider Local Artists for Village Entrance

I am disappointed by the proposal to plant a very large piece of industrial whimsy at the Village Gate, especially because it evokes the magical mushrooms like the ones of Alice in Wonderland. The giant sculptures at Burning Man, which might be similarly characterized, are a powerful artistic statement, at least in part because they are removed completely at the end of the festival.

We have a beautiful, and some say unique, spot of world geography here at Laguna Beach. Please consider instead the work of a local artist to be removed each end of season and replaced with another, a yearly surprise to visitors and residents.
